Pioneering modernists like Mahmoud Said and Inji Efflatoun appear alongside contemporary artists including Youssef Nabil, many shown in the US for the first time. The show traces six bodies of work made in Texas from the late 1930s to the early 1950s, from nature studies to light drawings, anchored by 48 recent gifts from collector Herbert Lust.

The exhibition traces the evolving understanding of the medium among African Americans across a century of change.

Organized with the Cape Ann Museum.
